Student Loans & Financial Aid at Georgia Southern University
All students seeking financial assistance must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be eligible for federal student loans and other types of financial aid. Additional applications may be required depending on the loan program.
Federal Loans
Georgia Southern University participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program, offering eligible students access to subsidized and unsubsidized federal loans. These loans provide flexible repayment options and competitive interest rates.
Private & Alternative Loans
In addition to federal aid, students may also apply for Private or Alternative Loans through approved lenders. These loans are typically based on credit and may require a co-signer. Students are encouraged to compare loan terms carefully before applying.
Entrance Loan Counseling
Students borrowing funds through the Federal Direct Loan Program for the first time are required to complete Entrance Loan Counseling. This online session ensures you understand your rights, responsibilities, and repayment obligations as a borrower.
Exit Loan Counseling
If you have borrowed through the Federal Direct Loan Program while enrolled at Georgia Southern University, you are required by law to complete Exit Loan Counseling when you graduate, withdraw, or drop below half-time enrollment. This process reviews repayment plans and helps you prepare for loan repayment.
Master Promissory Note (MPN)
To finalize your federal student loan, you must complete and sign your Federal Direct Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN). This legally binding document outlines the terms and conditions of your loan.
