
Georgia Southern University’s Waters College of Health Professions (WCHP) will host the Norman Fries Distinguished Lecture Series with keynote speaker Don L. Waters on Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. The lecture, titled “A Native Son’s Vision for Southeast Georgia,” will be held at the Statesboro Campus Performing Arts Center.

Celebrate: Together, a festival celebrating the Georgia Southern community at the Armstrong Campus, is back this year on October 24, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., in the Residential Plaza.

Georgia Southern University’s Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing has received a commitment of $500,000. The donation is a gift from Smith Douglas Homes in Atlanta, Georgia, that will be used to support additional faculty, provide scholarships and support equipment and supplies needed to educate students in residential construction.

A new Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences will debut in Georgia Southern University’s College of Science and Mathematics Fall 2025 roster following degree approval at the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents meeting in Atlanta on Oct. 8. The new program is the first of its kind offered by a USG institution.


Gulzar Shah, Ph.D., professor and department chair of Health Policy and Community Health in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health was recently awarded a 2024 Best Researcher Award by the organization International Academic Achievements. International Academic Achievements recognizes scholars who have made significant accomplishments in the field of education, research and scholarly work that have global recognition and impact.

The Georgia Southern University Alumni Association “40 Under 40” Class of 2024 was recognized at a ceremony on Sept. 13 at the Statesboro Convention & Visitors Bureau. The annual honor recognizes young alumni who have made significant strides in business, leadership, community, educational or philanthropic endeavors.

Georgia Southern University’s Tyler Cyronak, Ph.D., has secured a $250,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to investigate the pivotal role of seagrass in combating climate change. “Coastal ecosystems and coastal communities are some of the most vulnerable to climate change,” explains Cyronak.

Georgia Southern University President Kyle Marrero delivered a State of the University Fall 2024 address to more than 500 faculty, staff and students in the Performing Arts Center on the Statesboro Campus on Sept. 4 and in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Armstrong Campus on Sept. 5.

Georgia Southern University was included on The Wall Street Journal’s Best U.S. Colleges 2025 list, which was created in collaboration with College Pulse and the independent market research firm Statista.
