Welcome to the Department of Environmental Health & Safety. We provide environmental health and safety (EHS) guidance to the campus community by developing, reviewing and implementing EHS policy and guiding principles in accordance with current regulations. In support of this mission, we develop and facilitate EHS programs and conduct training for campus personnel on how to meet regulatory compliance.

Guiding Principles & Objectives

Our Environmental Health and Safety team is charged by the Board of Regents to protect the campus community through proactive leadership, training and compliance. We develop and maintain policies, monitor regulatory changes and collaborate with campus partners to promote safe, sustainable operations. Our commitment is to uphold the highest standards of health, safety and environmental stewardship in support of Georgia Southern’s mission.

Our Mission stems from the Charge from The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia:

  1. Provide Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) guidance to the campus community by developing, reviewing and implementing EHS policy and guiding principles.
  2. Track and remain up-to-date on regulatory changes and developments.
  3. Provide leadership in building EHS programs by functioning as facilitator.
  4. Arrange and conduct EHS training for campus personnel to meet regulatory compliance.
  5. Promptly investigate potential EHS problems and issues and coordinate corrective action and follow-up.

Our purpose is to:

  1. Comply with all applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations. In the absence of specific laws or regulations, good management practices shall be followed in order to avoid or reduce environmental risk.
  2. Develop, follow and continuously improve environmental, health and safety procedures and practices for all facilities, projects and operations in support of GSU Mission Statement.
  3. Perform periodic environmental, health and safety program reviews to correct deficiencies, establish goals and identify funding priorities.
  4. Work cooperatively with government, industry and other appropriate organizations in developing reasonable environmental, health and safety strategies, which promote sustainable development and continual environmental improvement in local communities.
