This is not an exhaustive list. Therefore, it is always appropriate to contact the Dean of Students Office for advice and guidance.

Helping Eagles Recognize Distress & Offer Support
Mental health issues are an increasing concern on our campuses, and this folder has been designed to assist you in supporting students, faculty or staff. You are vitally important in identifying and helping individuals in distress or those at risk for suicide. The information in this folder provides tools for you to recognize individuals in distress and connect them with appropriate resources. You strengthen our community by creating a network of support.

Faculty should report all incidents of academic dishonesty using the dedicated form. Once submitted, our office will review prior history and guide the resolution process. The Informal Resolution Form will be sent to you to resolve the case yourself or request additional documentation of the violation for the case to be heard and resolved within the Provost’s Office and/or the Office of Student Conduct.

What is classroom disruption? The Georgia Southern University Student Conduct Code defines classroom disruption as;
- Any classroom behavior that interferes with the instructor’s ability to conduct class, failure to conform to the faculty member’s announced expectations for the classroom, or the ability of other Students to learn.
- Use of cell phones or other electronic devices for voice or text communication in class, unless permitted by the faculty member.
View the Conduct Process and Classroom Disruption Faculty Guide for more information.
Faculty Notifications: Students can request that the Dean of Students Office notify their faculty when they will be absent from class. If a student’s faculty notification request is approved, you and the student will be included in the communication from the Dean of Students Office. Request are typically reviewed within 3 business days. The final decision can take up to two weeks, if the student is asked to provide additional documentation.
Sample language to add to your syllabi:
The Dean of Students Office offers a verification service for student-provided information regarding necessary absences, illnesses, or extenuating life events. The university does not issue excuses for class absences and a faculty notification is not an excuse for missing class. If you experience an unplanned absence, you are encouraged to submit a Faculty Notification Request.
Be sure to keep the following in mind when submitting a Faculty Notification Request:
- Students must submit completed (with supporting documentation) faculty notification requests within seven (7) business days from the first date of absence.
- Requests received after seven (7) business days from the first date of absence will not be considered/reviewed.
- Submission of any fraudulent documentation could result in a Student Conduct case for the student named in the request.
Please feel free to adjust, or select other highlights from the Faculty Notification Procedure.
Concern for a Student: If you are concerned for a student’s wellbeing, please complete the referral form below. Examples of potentially concerning behavior:
- Worrisome language in an assignment or communication
- Missing several classes and not being responsive to your outreach
- Behaving out of character in class, causing general concern for the health or mental wellbeing
- Anything that makes you believe that the student might benefit from outreach from the Dean of Students Office and additional resources and support
