Georgia Southern University is gearing up for this year’s Constitution Day, an event dedicated to celebrating the United States Constitution and educating students about their rights and responsibilities under it. With this year’s celebration falling on National Voter Registration Day, the theme centers around voting rights.

This recognition is courtesy of Camus Compact, which is a network of colleges across the country dedicated to promoting and recognizing public work in higher education.

Georgia Southern staff member wins experiential education research award

Urkovia Andrews, DrPH., assistant director for service-learning in the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement (OLCE), recently won the 2021 National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) Outstanding Experiential Education Research award. The award recognizes Andrews’ published research that makes important contributions to the understanding of experiential education.

Georgia Southern Sustainability Programs fighting fast fashion with campus thrift store

Sustainability Programs at Georgia Southern University is teaming up with student organization Fashion Menagerie, a group of fashion merchandising and apparel design students, to fight fast fashion by hosting the first campus thrift store on the Statesboro Campus. Clothing donations are currently being accepted through March 26 at various locations around campus.

Georgia Southern celebrates Arbor Day by planting trees on Statesboro Campus

Georgia Southern University biology major Daria Stephens had never used a shovel until the 2021 Arbor Day Celebration on March 5, where she helped plant a tree near the Herty Pines Nature Preserve as part of her botany class. Stephens said the class inspired her to put what she is learning into action.

Since 2006, students at Georgia Southern University have been going on weeklong, immersive, issue-focused service experiences known as alternative breaks. In July, when most people at Georgia Southern University were wondering when students, faculty and staff would be able to return to campus, Jordan Wilburn was thinking about the upcoming holiday season. Specifically, Wilburn, who is the Community Engagement Coordinator in the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement, was brainstorming ways to keep the Holiday Helper Tree, a 27-year-old holiday tradition, alive during the COVID-19 pandemic.
