Georgia Southern Department of Sociology and Anthropology helps close digital divide in Bulloch County

The Georgia Southern University Department of Sociology and Anthropology is partnering with the Willow Hill Heritage and Renaissance Center (WHHRC) in Portal, Georgia, to help families in Bulloch County get access to technology and the internet., Participants who need to access the internet during the COVID-19 pandemic will check out and use equipment at an outdoor facility with tables, electricity and fans.

‘Who Cares? Casual Conversations with Southern Scholars’ podcast makes debut

Georgia Southern University’s College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and College of Education have partnered to host a nontraditional research podcast, “Who Cares? Casual Conversations with Southern Scholars.”

The podcast, which debuted on Sept. 24, focuses on the impact that University research is making on our communities.

Georgia Southern’s wildlife center to reopen Oct. 5

Georgia Southern University’s famed Center for Wildlife Education Center and the Lamar Q Ball, Jr. Raptor Center will reopen Monday, Oct. 5, at 9 a.m.

Closed since the pandemic hit in March, workers have used the time to refurbish many areas of the center and finish a new observation deck at the waterfowl exhibit. Visitors will be able to enter the enclosure and view 125 ducks representing 16 species, the largest collection of waterfowl in Georgia.

The University Store at Georgia Southern University has expanded its digital resources for students and one new program has saved 9,000-plus students more than $565,000 this semester.

The Psychology Clinic on the Georgia Southern University Statesboro Campus will provide free dementia screenings and psychotherapy for caregivers thanks to a $10,000 donation from Rockin’ Out Alzheimer’s Disease (ROAD). The services will be provided in person and virtually.

Georgia Southern to test emergency communication system on Sept. 24

Georgia Southern University is scheduled to test all components of the EAGLE ALERT system on Thursday, Sept. 24, at approximately 1:50 p.m. The EAGLE ALERT system is an emergency communication system designed to play a key role in keeping Georgia Southern’s students, faculty, staff and visitors safe during emergency situations.

Georgia Southern biology professor awarded grant to support minority students

Georgia Southern University Professor of Biology J. Checo Colón-Gaud, Ph.D., is part of a team of researchers awarded a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to support training and experiences for underrepresented minority students and early career scientists in the field of freshwater science. Funds for the project called “Emerge” will be distributed over the next five years.
