Georgia Southern University is committed to the safety and preparedness of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Emergencies can happen with little or no warning, but being prepared makes a difference. By creating a plan, knowing where to find resources, and practicing safety steps, you can respond quickly and effectively.
Explore the resources below to learn how to stay safe on and off campus:
Emergency Kit
Every Eagle should keep a small emergency kit ready at home, in your car, or in your backpack. Essential supplies include water, food, first aid materials, flashlights, batteries, important documents, and personal medications. A well-stocked kit ensures you have the basics you need during power outages, storms, or evacuations.
Emergency Plans & Protective Action Guides
The University maintains a comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan and Protective Action Guide that outline how to prepare for, respond to, and recover from all types of hazards. These guides provide clear steps for faculty, staff, and students to follow in various emergencies.
Helpful Websites
Stay informed with trusted emergency resources such as the National Weather Service, Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), and local county emergency offices. These websites provide updates on severe weather, road closures, evacuation routes, and shelter information.
Mobile Apps & Alert Communications
Georgia Southern uses Eagle Alert, a mass notification system, to share urgent updates via text, phone, and email. Students and employees are encouraged to also download the LiveSafe app for reporting safety concerns and accessing emergency contacts. National Weather Service apps provide real-time alerts for changing conditions.
Safety Tips
Personal safety is a priority on campus. Simple steps such as traveling in groups after dark, using the LiveSafe app’s SafeWalk feature, securing your belongings, and locking doors can prevent crime and keep you safe.
School Safe Lock Mechanism
In the event of an active threat, some classrooms are equipped with a school safe lock mechanism. Learn how to quickly secure doors and protect yourself until help arrives.
