Georgia Southern’s Military and Veteran Student Center hosts inaugural Veterans Day Ceremony
On Nov. 11, Georgia Southern’s Military and Student Veteran Center will host the inaugural Veterans Day Ceremony in honor of our American heroes. The event will take place on Sweetheart Circle where American flags will line the walkway from the entrance of the circle to the Marvin Pittman building, and the stately oak trees will be adorned with yellow ribbons. Patriotic music, remarks, and a special appearance by Freedom, the University’s American bald eagle, are planned for guests. Students, faculty, staff and members of the community are encouraged to attend.

College of Education faculty works with Smithsonian Institution on evolution education grant
Glaze serves as a co-investigator on a $1,083,000 grant the Smithsonian Institution has received from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the second grant in a series that began with a three-year NSF grant to develop teaching modules for advanced placement (AP) biology students. The grant, entitled “Learning Evolution through Human Examples” focuses on the redesign of the early AP teaching modules for use in general high school biology courses to encourage and support the teaching of human and non-human evolution in the curriculum.
Alyce Santoro’s Tonal Relativity opens at Center for Art & Theatre in November
The Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art will present Alyce Santoro’s Tonal Relativity in the University Gallery at the Center for Art and Theatre from Nov. 7 to Dec. 9. The community is invited on Nov. 10 to a 5 p.m. lecture given by Santoro in the Visual Arts building, room 2071, followed by a reception at 6 p.m. at the Center for Art and Theatre.

Georgia Southern provides shelter to animals from Georgia Sea Turtle Center
In the midst of Hurricane Matthew, residents of coastal Georgia were not the only ones taking to the evacuation routes. A gopher tortoise, diamondback terrapins, box turtles, sea turtles, additional turtles, an owl and a wood stork from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island took shelter on Georgia Southern University’s campus as the hurricane passed through the region.
