Georgia Southern graduate student is using oysters to dig for Lowcountry history
Public history graduate student Sadie Ingram is studying a Gullah Geechee oystermen and how they developed the Lowcountry economically and culturally. She is working with History Department professors Julie de Chantal, Ph.D., Lisa Denmark, Ph.D., Michael Van Wagenen, Ph.D., and Georgia Southern University Museum Director Brent Tharp, Ph.D. Her fieldwork is guided by Kurt Knoerl, Ph.D., who has a national reputation for taking students to the shorelines to find artifacts.

Georgia Southern University’s Arts Marketing Manager Lauren M. Holmen (’13) is also a professional dancer and choreographer who has been performing since she could walk. Today, her multiple roles overlap and are deeply threaded throughout Savannah’s thriving arts scene. At present, she’s a pro dancer in the inaugural “Dancing with the Bananas” competition, hosted by the Savannah Bananas baseball team, and heads to Round 2 of the competition on July 6.

The Georgia Southern Chorale, a choir of 30 students from Georgia Southern University, is preparing for a 14-day trip to Germany that begins on July 4. While there, the students will participate in the “Sing Berlin!” international choir competition, featuring professional, university and community choirs from around the world. The choir qualified thanks to success in previous international competitions.

Georgia Southern University’s annual economic impact soars to more than $1 billion
The latest report released by the University System of Georgia (USG) shows that Georgia Southern continues to have a strong economic impact on the region it serves and significantly contributed to the USG’s $19.3 billion total economic impact between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021. The report indicates that Georgia Southern’s annual economic impact has soared to more than $1 billion for FY 2021, a 7.4% increase over FY 2020.
