
Three bachelor’s programs in the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing have recently received reaccreditation status. The Bachelor of Science in Construction degree program received reaccreditation from the American Council for Construction Education. David Scott, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction, and David Williams, associate dean for students and curriculum, co-chaired the accreditation team. Celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, with Georgia Southern University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. This year’s month-long celebration, which highlights the history, culture and many contributions of the Latino and Hispanic communities in the U.S., will feature a series of brown bag lectures and lunches, movies, discussion panels, study abroad information sessions, soccer, fiestas, food and more.

Obtaining an undergraduate biology or chemistry degree and Doctor of Pharmacy degree will now take less time and will be more affordable for local students thanks to a new agreement between Georgia Southern University and South University. The “3+3” program between the two institutions is available now to current and incoming Georgia Southern students.

Georgia Southern University’s long-term commitment to veteran student success has a boost thanks to a U.S. Department of Education grant. The grant, totaling almost $459,000, is to establish a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success (CEVSS) on all three of Georgia Southern University’s campuses, located in Savannah, Statesboro and Hinesville. The CEVSS goal is to increase enrollment and retention of the University’s veteran students. The awarded amount will be paid out over three years.
Georgia Southern University’s latest Economic Monitor, which reflects Q2 2021, reports that the Savannah metro area economy surged for the third-consecutive quarter through the midpoint of the year. “All major indicators of the regional economy increased during the second quarter,” stated Michael Toma, Ph.D., Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Economics. “Tourism indicators skyrocketed along with consumer confidence. Employment growth was steady and sustainable, while port activity and electricity sales contributed more modestly to regional growth.”

Michael Pemberton, Ph.D., was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) at the 2021 International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference. Pemberton holds the rank of professor in the Department of Writing and Linguistics, and he directs the University Writing Center in Statesboro.
