Georgia Southern’s Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Center opens, bridges connections between past and present
The collective cultural memory of the Gullah Geechee people, descendants of enslaved West Africans who inhabited the barrier islands of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and northern Florida, has survived through oral histories and distinctive arts, music, dance, foodways and language. However, few within the Gullah Geechee community today, which is estimated to be a population of 1 million, can speak the African Creole language or tell the stories of their ancestors who are credited with influencing southern and American culture. Get a peek into ‘The Digital Age’ through senior exhibition on Armstrong Campus
“The Digital Age,” a senior exhibition presented by Georgia Southern’s Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art, will showcase works by graduating students Faith Manuel, Ferris Smith, Rori Brown and Shantel DeLosAngeles. The exhibition will run weekdays from Sept. 15 to Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fine Arts Gallery on Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus in Savannah. A reception will be held Oct. 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission to the exhibition is free and open to the public.

Tilicia Mayo-Gamble earns National Institute of Health award
Tilicia Mayo-Gamble, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Community Health in Georgia Southern University’s Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, has received a Loan Repayment Program (LRP) financial award from the National Institute of Health (NIH). Mayo-Gamble’s award is from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute branch of the LRP program, designated for investigators conducting research that focuses on one or more of the minority health disparity populations. Georgia Southern’s College of Education creates research center dedicated to youth advocacy
For more than 30 years, Georgia Southern University’s National Youth Advocacy and Resilience (NYAR) Conference (formerly the National Youth-at-Risk Conference) has served as an epicenter of information sharing and advancement for the support of youth facing challenges across the nation. The conference recently led to the creation of the NYAR Research Center, an interdisciplinary facility that is housed in Georgia Southern’s College of Education to further enhance the conference’s efforts in supporting youth across the nation.

New scholarship fund supports military spouses at Georgia Southern
A new scholarship fund designed specifically for the spouses of military service members has been established at Georgia Southern University. Thanks to support from The Landings Military Family Relief Fund Inc., up to $3,000 is available per recipient, per semester, for a select number of spouses of active duty service members, who have completed one term as a full-time student and is in good academic standing with the University. Recipients can attend any Georgia Southern Campus in Savannah, Hinesville or Statesboro.
