
For the 10th year in a row, Georgia Southern University has been named a Military Friendly school by Viqtory Media, earning a gold-level distinction in the large public school category for 2021-22. The University has also been named a Military Friendly Spouse School.

For the first time in its 32-year history, the National Youth-at-Risk (NYAR) Conference is going virtual. From March 8 to 10, the conference will provide resources and training for youth advocates, including teachers, administrators, therapists, community leaders, health professionals and social workers with the goal of creating safe, healthy, caring and intellectually empowering educational environments for the nation’s youth.

The Georgia Southern University College of Engineering and Computing has extended the application window for the summer 2021 Research Experience for Undergraduates program “Propulsion, Aerodynamics, Materials and Controls of Aerial Vehicles.” Due to overwhelming demand, the application process will remain open until March 15 to give all interested students an opportunity to apply. Applications are accepted from undergraduates across the United States who are interested in an opportunity to engage with and work side by side on real-world research in state-of-the-art engineering labs. Georgia Southern University junior Gabrielle Scott has been awarded a Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) Region 4 Stage Management Fellowship. Scott, who is double majoring in theater and women’s, gender and sexuality studies, was also recently named to the inaugural cohort for the Cody Renard Richard Scholarship program for theater majors who are Black, Asian, Latinx, Indigenous and people of color.

Georgia Southern University will host a virtual discussion with acclaimed author, professor and hip-hop scholar Regina N. Bradley, Ph.D., on March 4 at 6 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Department of Literature, is open to the public.

Georgia Southern University licensed professional counselor Nikita Robinson and staff psychologist Mark Taracuk, Ph.D., took top spots at the 2021 Georgia College Counseling Association (GCCA) awards in January. Robinson was named the Sylvia Shortt Counselor of the Year while Taracuk won awards for Clinical Program of the Year and Outstanding Professional Contribution to Knowledge.



With University System of Georgia approval Tuesday, Georgia Southern University’s planned convocation center in Statesboro will be named in honor of the late Senator Jack Hill and his wife of 46 years, Ruth Ann Hill. Both are Georgia Southern graduates. The Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center will be the signature building on Georgia Southern’s south campus. It will be located on university-owned land on the southwest side of the intersection of Lanier Drive and Veterans Memorial Parkway (US 301 bypass).

Georgia Southern University professor Marla Morris, Ph.D., FRSA, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. Awarded by the Royal Society of Arts, the prestigious fellowship is limited to individuals determined to have made outstanding achievements to social progress and development. Previous fellows of note include Stephen Hawking, Charles Dickens, Karl Marx, Marie Curie and Benjamin Franklin.
