Georgia Southern student awarded Kennedy Center fellowship, wins scholarship
Georgia Southern University junior Gabrielle Scott has been awarded a Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) Region 4 Stage Management Fellowship. Scott, who is double majoring in theater and women’s, gender and sexuality studies, was also recently named to the inaugural cohort for the Cody Renard Richard Scholarship program for theater majors who are Black, Asian, Latinx, Indigenous and people of color.

Georgia Southern University will host a virtual discussion with acclaimed author, professor and hip-hop scholar Regina N. Bradley, Ph.D., on March 4 at 6 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Department of Literature, is open to the public.

Georgia Southern Counseling Center staff win big at Georgia College Counseling Association awards
Georgia Southern University licensed professional counselor Nikita Robinson and staff psychologist Mark Taracuk, Ph.D., took top spots at the 2021 Georgia College Counseling Association (GCCA) awards in January. Robinson was named the Sylvia Shortt Counselor of the Year while Taracuk won awards for Clinical Program of the Year and Outstanding Professional Contribution to Knowledge.

BOR approves naming of planned Convocation Center at Georgia Southern
With University System of Georgia approval Tuesday, Georgia Southern University’s planned convocation center in Statesboro will be named in honor of the late Senator Jack Hill and his wife of 46 years, Ruth Ann Hill. Both are Georgia Southern graduates. The Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center will be the signature building on Georgia Southern’s south campus. It will be located on university-owned land on the southwest side of the intersection of Lanier Drive and Veterans Memorial Parkway (US 301 bypass).

Georgia Southern’s Marla Morris elected Fellow of Royal Society of Arts
Georgia Southern University professor Marla Morris, Ph.D., FRSA, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. Awarded by the Royal Society of Arts, the prestigious fellowship is limited to individuals determined to have made outstanding achievements to social progress and development. Previous fellows of note include Stephen Hawking, Charles Dickens, Karl Marx, Marie Curie and Benjamin Franklin.

Georgia Southern University Associate Professor of Geography, Amy Potter, Ph.D., has been awarded a $75,000 National Science Foundation grant for the project, “The Role of Museums in the Landscape of Minority Representation.”

The “grit and grace” that defines the historic Gretsch sound is also a perfect label for Georgia Southern, as the university’s school of music will now be named after the world-famous drum and guitar maker. The Georgia Southern University Center for Africana Studies is hosting “Go Back and Fetch It! African Folktales Traditions, Meanings, and Relevance,” featuring Gullah Geechee storyteller and Armstrong alumna Lillian Grant-Baptiste (’13).
