Restricted Party Screening

Why Restricted Party Screening Matters

Restricted Party Screening (RPS) protects Georgia Southern University from engaging with prohibited individuals or organizations. By checking federal restricted, blocked, and denied party lists before agreements are made, the university ensures compliance with export control laws, safeguards research integrity, and reduces risks in international collaborations and vendor partnerships.

What is Restricted Party Screening?

The United States federal export control laws prohibit U.S. persons and groups from conducting business with any entity that is listed as a restricted, blocked or denied party. Each government entity maintains a list of individuals and businesses that fit this criteria for their purposes. Visual Compliance maintains an up to date compendium of these lists allowing us to screen potential faculty, collaborators, visitors, vendors etc. in one place prior to entering into any arrangement or agreement to assure we are not doing business with any entity that is a restricted party.

Restricted Party Screening (RPS) is an essential compliance tool for universities, businesses, and research institutions engaged in international collaboration, procurement, or partnerships. By verifying individuals and organizations against federal watch lists, RPS helps safeguard against legal violations, financial penalties, and reputational harm.

At Georgia Southern University, RPS is used to evaluate a wide range of relationships—including research collaborations, international visitors, vendor agreements, and sponsorships—before commitments are made. This process ensures that faculty and staff remain compliant with U.S. export control regulations, protects institutional integrity, and minimizes risks associated with global partnerships.

Through the use of Visual Compliance, the university has access to a centralized, constantly updated database that consolidates lists maintained by multiple agencies such as the U.S. Department of Commerce, Department of State, and Department of Treasury. This system streamlines the screening process and provides confidence that engagements are legally and ethically sound.
