Georgia Southern earns National Park Service contract for Andersonville National Historic Site

A trio of Georgia Southern University faculty members have been awarded a $190,000 contract to work with the National Park Service for an Andersonville National Historic Site project.

A multidisciplinary group of College of Education professors, affably referred to as “Team Social Studies,” recently won the 2023 Georgia Council for Social Studies Program of Excellence Award at the organization’s annual conference, which was held in Athens, Georgia.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources awards grant for more than $254,000 to Georgia Southern University

A grant of more than $254,000 awarded to Georgia Southern University will provide the first comprehensive assessment of Georgia’s working waterfronts since 1975. Although location data on docks was gathered by Georgia Southern researchers between 2018-21 through a Georgia Sea Grant project, there is no in-depth information on the current conditions of each dock and its infrastructure, according to Jennifer Sweeney Tookes, Ph.D., a Georgia Southern associate anthropology professor.

Hinesville Business Incubator for Entrepreneurship celebrates grand opening

The Hinesville Development Authority, Liberty County Chamber of Commerce and the city of Hinesville, in partnership with Georgia Southern University’s Business Innovation Group (BIG), have launched the very first Hinesville Business Incubator, partially funded by an Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant. The incubator is located across the street from Georgia Southern’s Liberty Campus in downtown Hinesville. 

Georgia Power Foundation awards grant for BIG Edge Entrepreneurship Program 

Georgia Southern University’s Business Innovation Group (BIG) has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Georgia Power Foundation, Inc., to empower diversity in early-stage entrepreneurship. In turn, BIG has created the BIG Edge Entrepreneurship Program for six entrepreneurs to have offices and participate in entrepreneurship programs at the Georgia Grown Innovation Center (GGIC) in Metter, Georgia, for one year. 

2023 Mark Finlay Memorial Lecture Series hosts Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic  Jerry Saltz on Nov. 9

Saltz will soon come to Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus as part of the Mark Finlay Memorial Lecture Series. His 60-minute lecture, “The Art World Problem,” will be at the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Armstrong Campus on Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.

“Moveable Feast” lecture series returns with discussion of Oscar Wilde at historic venue

The College of Arts and Humanities will host the latest installment of its “Moveable Feast” lecture series on Oscar Wilde. The event is on Monday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m.. at the Savannah Theatre, located at 222 Bull Street in Savannah.

Georgia Southern University debuts checkout-free store with Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology

Georgia Southern University, one of the top-ranked colleges in the Southeastern U.S., today announced the opening of the newly renovated Gus Mart convenience store – now featuring Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology – in the Fielding D. Russell Union on its Statesboro campus. The debut of the technology makes Georgia Southern the first university in the state to feature Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology, which provides a streamlined, checkout-free shopping experience. The store will operate with extended hours, allowing guests to better shop when it’s easiest for them. 

Georgia Southern faculty participate in Bill & Melinda Gates mindset study

Georgia Southern University is one of 10 colleges and universities that recently participated in an Association of College and University Educators study which demonstrates that when college and university faculty participate in high-quality and comprehensive courses in effective teaching practices, they report substantial increases in their confidence.
