Social Studies Storytelling in Statesboro kicked off on May 27

Every town has a story to tell. 

Georgia Southern University undergraduate elementary education students, in tandem with faculty and local public history experts, are bringing Statesboro’s history to life with a new digital walking tour, which launches this Saturday, May 27.

Last week, approximately 4,200 graduates from Georgia Southern University’s Statesboro, Armstrong and Liberty campuses received associate, baccalaureate, masters, specialist and doctoral degrees in five Spring 2023 Commencement ceremonies.

TEDxSavannah to inspire, spark discussion on Georgia Southern’s Armstrong Campus May 25

TEDxSavannah is one of the city’s most anticipated annual events, offering individuals and organizations in Savannah a platform to meet, share ideas and collaborate.

In its 12th year, TEDxSavannah will for the first time take place in Georgia Southern University’s Fine Arts Auditorium on the Armstrong Campus on May 25 from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m., debuting a new, half-day format and special rates for Georgia Southern students, faculty and staff. Following the main event, ticket holders can walk to the Armstrong Center for an after party with food trucks and live entertainment.

Military & Veteran Services to host informational sessions on National Day of Service May 6 

In honor of the second annual Veterans of Foreign Wars National Day of Service, Georgia Southern University’s Military & Veteran Services will host informational sessions on Veterans Affairs issues and benefits on all three campuses on May 6. The events are free and open to students, faculty, staff and the community.

2023 Georgia Southern Alumni Association Awards honor alumni achievements and community engagement

Georgia Southern University’s Alumni Association recognized the highest levels of achievement and service among the University’s alumni during the 2023 Alumni Awards ceremony, held at the Statesboro Convention & Visitors Bureau on April 14. 

Economic Monitor Q4 reports trajectory of slowing regional growth continues; Savannah metro expected to be insulated from recession 

The Savannah metro economy’s path of slowing growth continued for the fifth consecutive quarter, according to Georgia Southern University’s latest Economic Monitor, which reflects Q4 2022. Yet, the outlook for the region is optimal. 

Georgia Southern clinic to remove barriers to Parkinson’s speech therapy in Georgia

The RiteCare Center for Communication Disorders at Georgia Southern University is teaming up with a Texas nonprofit clinic to help all Georgians with Parkinson’s Disease have access to high-quality speech treatment. Parkinson Voice Project, a clinic committed to helping people with Parkinson’s regain and retain their speech and swallowing, is awarding the RiteCare Center a grant worth more than $280,000 in training, services, supplies and equipment over five years.

‘Black History Trail’ launches for Tybee Island visitors

For the past few years, a team of researchers at Georgia Southern University has been collecting the stories and historic layout of the island. Specifically, landmarks from slavery and up to the Civil Rights Movement.

As a final product, the team launched a digital trail for visitors to follow; from the Lazaretto Creek quarantine station for enslaved people, to the Brown Cement Factory and other important sites on the island.

The summer before James Brown began his graduate school career at Georgia Southern University, he found himself alongside Waters College of Health Professions Associate Professor Greg Grosicki, Ph.D., in Tahoe City, California, surrounded by more than 40 of the world’s most elite athletes and about half a dozen researchers.
